When most people think of Memphis, their first thoughts go to Tennessee and the Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum. But, just over the Mississippi River lies West Memphis in Arkansas. It might not be as well known, but it’s still chock full of history, museums, and great places to visit.
West Memphis, Arkansas, has a population of about 25,000 people and is located in eastern Crittenden County, about eight miles from downtown Memphis, Tennessee. During the 30s, 40s, and 50s, 8th street in West Memphis was considered “Beale Street West” because it was home to a nightlife that rivaled the one found across the river. As the city grew, it became an essential spot for the trucking industry, which coined it as the “Crossroads of America.”
The city still bustles from those times. Downtown West Memphis, called Broadway, offers nearly 100 stores and restaurants and hosts live blues singers and events in the city’s “Blues on Broadway.”
