10 Strains That Make You Laugh Until You Cry

Body and Mind
Body and Mind January 23, 2023

When was the last time you laughed so hard that you cried? Do you remember the feeling? You try to hold it together, but every time you look up at your friends, you all just break into hysterical laughter. Those are some of the best times. We never forget them, and we wish they happened more often. Well, why can’t they? Let us take you back to that happy place with these ten strains that make you laugh until you cry!

Why Is It Important To Laugh?

It may be a cliche, but it’s true. Laughter is the best medicine. Seriously. Check out these fun facts on laughter. They’re kind of amazing.

Laughter is good for your health.

Laughter relaxes you. It relieves tension and stress.

Laughter boosts the immune system.

Laughter improves resistance to disease by decreasing stress hormones and increasing immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies.

Laughter triggers endorphins

Endorphins make you feel good and may even relieve pain.

Laughter is good for your heart.

Laughter improves blood vessel function and increases blood flow. This may help prevent heart attacks and cardiovascular issues.

Laughter burns calories

Well, to be honest, the comedy club won’t replace the gym, but laughing burns more calories than moping about.

Laughter relieves anger

Holding bitterness or resentment is a killer. Nothing helps you drop a grudge faster than a shared laugh. After all, would you rather be right or happy?

Laughter may help you live longer.

According to a Norwegian study, people with a strong sense of humor may outlive people that don’t laugh as much. They’re also a lot more fun to spend time with.

Why Does Weed Make You Laugh?

Before we get to how marijuana makes us laugh, let’s get a handle on why we laugh at all. Laughter is complex and involves areas of the human brain that regulate memory, motor skills, language, memory, auditory interpretation, and logic. If you think about it, laughter is really a reflex. When it’s genuine, it’s not intentional. Laughter is spontaneous. It just happens. It’s an involuntary response.

It may help trigger the laughter reflex.

While many areas of the brain process humor, the frontal and temporal lobes are the most active. These two brain areas are also affected by marijuana use when the cannabinoids and terpenes from marijuana interact with your endocannabinoid system (“ECS”).

This interaction stimulates blood flow to the frontal and temporal lobes. While it’s just a theory, this increased blood flow may make the brain more sensitive and cause you to laugh more easily.

Timothy Fong, a psychiatry professor from the UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative, agrees that cannabis may help trigger the laughter reflex. When you get high, “that altered state makes the reflex [to laugh] more likely to be triggered.”

The euphoric effect of weed may stimulate laughter.

Many people consume THC for its euphoric effects. While the research is emerging, THC is similar in structure to an endocannabinoid called Anandamide. Therefore, it directly influences how we process reward signals and feel pleasure. Because THC has a shape similar to anandamide, it may communicate with ECS, causing euphoric feelings.

While euphoria doesn’t directly cause laughter, it creates conditions for it. Without getting too heavy on the adjectives, euphoria is a happy and carefree feeling without anxiety and stress. These cerebral effects make it easier for something to hit your funny bone.

It may make you feel more social.

When we use cannabis with friends, it often helps us unwind and feel more relaxed and comfortable. When we’re uninhibited, having fun, and expressing ourselves freely, we’re more likely to share that funny anecdote that makes the group laugh until our cheeks hurt.

Cannabis makes laughter more contagious.

When the friend you’re sharing that joint with laughs, you will probably laugh with them. It’s science.

In the study “Social Laughter Triggers Endogenous Opioid Release in Humans,” social laughter caused a discharge of endorphins in parts of the brain that made the subjects more susceptible to contagious laughter.

Another study concluded that laughter stimulates feelings of social reciprocity and emotional resonance, which helped trigger contagious laughter.

It lowers the threshold for surprise.

While you might think that things get funnier when you’re high, it’s not the things; it’s you. One of the things that make you laugh is the element of surprise. It’s the punch line we never see coming that makes us laugh at jokes.

According to Dr. Mitch Earleywine, cannabis may lower the “threshold for surprise,” making every moment that much funnier.

You try a new weed strain.

Every cannabis strain is different. People often choose a strain because they’re looking for a particular effect. But did you know that some strains of cannabis may help you laugh? It’s true. If that sounds like fun to you, let’s take a look at ten of the best giggly strains out there.

What kind of weed makes you laugh — Sativa or Indica?

There is no bright-line rule here. Almost all of the strains that made this list are hybrids. However, most are Sativa dominant strains.

In modern slang, Sativa characterizes cannabis strains with an upbeat, cerebral, euphoric high. These effects are consistent with what may help trigger laughter.

So, as a general rule, sativa hybrids may be better than indica at making your next secession a laugh track for the ages.

What Are 10 Weed Strains that Make You Laugh?

Are you ready to laugh until you cry? Let’s do this!

Blue Diesel

When Jordan of the Islands crossed the Indica dominant Blueberry with the classic Sativa dominant NYC Diesel, he gave us Blue (“City”) Diesel. Blue Diesel stands out as one of the only Indica strains to make this list.

Blue Diesel is a gentle, functional high that lasts a while. It’s an excellent choice for that wake-and-bake or lunch break. Blue Diesel is one of those rare stains you can blaze all day and still get things done. Sweet and smooth, blue diesel smells pungent with subtle berry undertones. Its flavor is a wild mix of diesel and blueberry with hints of cotton candy.

Blue Diesel is a fantastic social smoke that dissolves worry and tension. The high is relaxing and happy, with a mood-elevating euphoria — all the conditions that prime you to just let go and laugh.

Laughing Buddha

With a name like that, you better deliver the goods. Laughing Buddha crosses landrace Sativas from Jamaica and Thailand. It’s a cerebral, energizing strain with a dank citrus flavor. Created by Barney’s Farm, Laughing Buddha won Third Place in the 2003 High Times Cannabis Cup.

Laughing Buddha tastes tropical, with herbal notes and a toasted, nutty flavor that grounds its fruitiness. Its smoke is rich and smooth with lemon skunk and herbal highlights. After the first few rips, tension and stress dissipate and give way to giddy euphoria.

Laughing Buddha’s friendly, positive vibes ease social interactions, and conversions flow freely. It’s only a matter of time before a funny comment in the smoking session kicks off the laughter.

Durban Poison

This pure South African Sativa landrace has some history. Fifty years ago, the famous breeder Ed Rosenthal crossed some plants from a bag of South African seeds. He took some of the best phenotypes and passed them on to Mel Frank, another breeder, for fine-tuning.

Mel Frank came up with an A and B line, and he gave the B line to the Amsterdam breeder Sam the Skunkman. Skunkman finished the job and gave us the Durban Poison we know today.

Durban Poison has that classic, dank funk with a hint of sweet licorice. The high is euphoric, creative, and social, making users feel chatty and relaxed. Durban Poison is also energizing. So much so that some call it the espresso of marijuana. That sounds like a good time to us. We’re already smiling.

Deadhead OG

If you like feeling pleasant and joyful (and who doesn’t), Deadhead OG is the strain for you. Deadhead OG is a hybrid with Sativa and Indica lineage from Chemdawg 91 and SFV OG. Its aroma is pleasant but pungent, with pine, lemon, and wood notes.

Deadhead OG is a happy, cheerful strain that’s the perfect pregame smoke for a funny movie or a stand-up comedy show.

Super Lemon Haze

This strain won first prize at the High Times Cannabis Cup in 2008 and 2009. Created by Arjan of Greenhouse Seeds, Super Lemon Haze is a Sativa-dominant hybrid from Arjan’s Super Silver Haze, a Cannabis Cup winner in 1997, 1998, and 1999.

Super Lemon Haze has an intense citrus nose that will pucker your lips like you’re sucking on a lemon. While the high is energizing, it also relieves stress and anxiety. This great daytime smoke will help you handle your business and whatever the day may bring with a good-natured sense of humor.

Ghost Train Haze

We’re staying on the Haze Train with Ghost Train Haze. Ghost Train won the 2014 High Times Cannabis Cup for best Sativa. It is also an annual winner of High Times Strongest Strains on Earth, so watch out!

Ghost Train Haze smells piney and sweet with hints of spiced citrus. The smoke is smooth, like an OG, with a sweet pine taste. Ghost Train is so potent that the effects are described as almost psychedelic. It combines Sativa’s cerebral euphoria with a heavy Indica body high. Oh yeah. And if you like the giggles, Ghost Train will definitely give them to you.

Cinex

Cinex is a Sativa-dominant hybrid that crosses Cinderella 99 with Vortex. It has a citrus aroma with skunk notes. The effects of the Cinex are creative and inspiring, with an elevated mood. Cinex is also great at relieving depression and stress, the leading causes of not laughing enough. So, take another rip and turn that frown upside down. Better yet, take two!

Liberty Haze

More Haze. Sorry, but that’s what happens when you create a strain so fire that it wins a Cannabis Cup. Liberty Haze is a Sativa dominant hybrid that crosses a Mississippi-born G13 and Chemdawg. Created by Barney’s Farm, Liberty Haze won best strain overall in the 2011 High Times Cannabis Cup

Liberty Haze smells like lime citrus with kush base notes. The smoke is smooth, and the lime is heavy on the exhale. With an energetic and thoughtful buzz, Liberty Haze is perfect for bonding and relaxing with friends. It will help you leave your stress and worries behind and cross over to the sunny side of the street. That’s where the laughter happens — in the sunshine.

Kosher Kush

We have another winner! Kosher Kush won the High Times Medical Cannabis Cup in 2012. It has the rare distinction of being the first commercial strain blessed by a Rabbi and is also one of the few Indica-dominant strains to make this list.

Like many strains from prohibition’s dark ages, Kosher Kush’s genetics are a mystery. That said, there’s likely an OG Kush parent somewhere in the mix. Kosher Kush is super dank with a pungent aroma that slaps. It’s excellent for relieving anxiety and stress but can also make you sleepy. So, prepare for drooping eyes and a case of giggles.

Sweet Diesel

Sweet Diesel is a fantastic hybrid from two of the best cultivars ever created — Sour Diesel and OG Kush. This one is so uplifting that you might find yourself orbiting planet bliss. Sweet Diesel gets its flavor from the Sour D parent — earthy, tart, and DIESEL.

Sweet Diesel will lift you up and chill you out. You’ll be full of creative energy, but the Kush side keeps a lid on it, so the mind is never overwhelmed. You never feel anxious when you’re smoking Sweet Diesel. Don’t worry. Be happy. And above all else, laugh. It’s really the best thing for you.
