Five Fun Activities in West Memphis

Big River Trail

Those looking for some fresh air and exercise will love the Big River Trail’s scenery and landscapes. Starting at the trailhead across from Pancho’s Mexican Restaurant in West Memphis, the trail features a 7-mile loop through the West Memphis flood plain, right next to the Mississippi River. 

The Big River Trail is a beloved natural beauty because it gives visitors and city goers a nice change of pace from the traffic and noise pollution. But, don’t be surprised if you see a few coal barges float by!

Traverse the trail however you like—run, bike, walk, skate, rollerblade, it’s truly a place for all. The best part is visitors of the trail can feel at ease with 24hr security monitoring and plenty of parking. Find the Big River Trail open for free daily from 6am to 10pm. 

Big River Crossing

In the vein of outdoor activities, it’s worth bringing up the legendary Big River Crossing. At nearly a mile in length, Big River Crossing is also the country’s longest active rail/bicycle/pedestrian bridge. 

Opened October 22, 2016, Big River Crossing is the longest public pedestrian/bike bridge across the Mississippi River, providing dramatic views of its ever-changing landscape. It serves as the connection point of Main Street to Main Street, a 10-mile multi-modal corridor that also features the Delta Regional River Park and Big River Trail. These create ties to attractions between Memphis, Tennessee, and West Memphis, Arkansas. 

The pedestrian bridge was first proposed in 1975 and official construction didn’t begin until 2014. It is also known for its stunning light display that is on full blast every night after sunset, definitely a must-see for visitors. 

Take a Brewery Tour

Who doesn’t love a good microbrew? West Memphis is one of the best cities in the country for craft beer, so you’ll get to visit some of the area’s most accomplished producers and do plenty of tastings and tours. 

Regardless of where you go, you’ll have a chance to sample an amazing array of brews with wildly different flavor profiles. Many microbreweries offer samplings paired with food as well.

Southland Casino and Racing

West Memphis is quickly becoming a gambling destination of the Mid-South. Southland Casino and Racing is the Mid-South’s fastest-growing gaming destination featuring more than 1,700 gaming machines including favorite titles such as Wheel of Fortune.

You can also watch and wager on live greyhound racing, as well as thoroughbred and greyhound simulcast racing with exclusive options, including the Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup.

Also, visit one of the many fantastic dining options including the Bourbon St. Steakhouse, World Market Buffet and Sammy Hagar’s Red Rocker Bar & Grill.

Visit an Orchard

If you have the fortune of being in West Memphis for apple season, you should grab a basket and find a locally-owned orchard. While apples aren’t exactly an Arkansas staple, it’s always a fun time for the family and a great opportunity to get your produce straight from the source. Find classics like Gala and HoneyCrisp, or the distinctly tart Arkansas Black.
